"The Caped Crusaders"

The South Carolina State University Drum Majors, “The Cape Crusaders”, believe that leaders take people where they want to go, but great leaders take people where they don't necessarily want to go, but where they ought to be. Leadership is known as a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. At South Carolina State University, “The Cape Crusaders” carry out this process by applying their leadership attributes, such as beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge and skills.  “The Cape Crusaders” of South Carolina State University know that great leadership starts with knowing themselves, seeking self-improvement, being technically proficient, seeking responsibility, taking responsibility for their actions, making sound and timely decisions, setting a great example for others, knowing who they’re leading, looking out for their well-being, believing in the power of God, and remembering that teamwork is the best kind of work. At South Carolina State University, we believe that leaders never say "I." And that's not because we have trained ourselves not to say "I”, because we don’t think “I“, we think "team." We, “The Cape Crusaders”, understand our job to make the Marching Band function and accept responsibility by not sidestepping it, but creating trust, which enables us to get the job done. As we, leaders of the Marching 101 Band, deal with tomorrow, our task is not to try to make perfect plans. Our task is to help create a band that is sufficiently flexible and versatile and can take our imperfect plans and make them work in execution. That is the essential character which separates the good bands from the great bands!
